What is emotional intelligence? (Back to top)
There are differences in people's ability to deal with emotions. Some individuals are better than others at identifying their own feelings (self-awareness); at identifying the feelings of others (empathy); and at solving problems that involve emotional issues.
Emotional awareness allows for clearer and more accurate reasoning, problem solving and decision making. Decisions based on healthy emotional awareness enhance the chances for personal, family, organizational, and community success. Emotional awareness forms the foundation for good interpersonal skills.
Emotional intelligence also involves the ability to separate healthy from unhealthy feelings. It enables the individual to turn negative emotions into positive ones and into growing opportunities. We will always make mistakes but the better we know ourselves and manage our emotions, the quicker and stronger our recovery from those mistakes.
Emotionally intelligent individuals can help others identify and benefit from their emotions.
What are the three C's of authentic leadership? (Back to top)
Good leaders are made not born. And, someone can be a good business leader across various industries or settings. Leadership success, therefore, is more a function of personal qualities rather than expert level knowledge of the field.
I believe business leaders must excel at three key functions: the three Cs -- Container, Communicator, and Cultivator.
Container -- An effective leader must be a steady, firm but flexible, container of the emotional stimuli being generated inside and around him. Planning and action must be supported and guided by self-knowledge and self-management. He must tolerate uncomfortable feelings; "contain" them and draw valuable information from them that help interpret what's going on in the environment. A leader who does not possess the ability to serve as a container will act blindly and impulsively as a way of getting away from uncomfortable internal feelings - as when a company CEO pushes unwise expansion to combat irrational personal feelings of insecurity or low self-worth.
Communicator -- The clarity that comes from knowing his internal dynamics also allows a good leader to be more authentic and secure with who he is. This state of being supports attempts to communicate, from the Latin to "share". Emotional honesty and self-knowledge allows a leader to be open to share his ideas as well as receive others'.
Cultivator -- Good business and family leaders are cultivators of human assets - the key function of parents. They know what others' strengths and areas of deficit are. They know what others need to become better. A farmer who provides the essential elements will facilitate the crop's growth and will yield a rich harvest.
Good leaders are able to see the larger purpose or vision, the eventual harvest that is not present when the dirt is not even yet prepared to receive the seed. The good leader accepts that he is not the vision; he is merely the servant or steward of the vision. Such leaders, and parents, relish their role as mentors.
What is "true Dialogue"? (Back to top)
True Dialogue occurs when the parties involved practice listening skills where they tap into their own thoughts and feelings as well as what's being communicated to them; when the parties respect and are open to learning from each other; when the parties suspend their pre-judgments and approach each other as if for the first time; and, when the parties appropriately voice their opinions. These elements allow for new solutions to be created that no party knew before the Dialogue started.
What is the Current Mission of Alonso Strategy Consulting? (Back to top)
To become the premier business consulting group in the Lehigh Valley by 2010.
What are the special advantages in working with a psychologist who is also a business coach? (Back to top)
Every corporate client must trust the business coach they allow to enter into their corporate home. Harmful change is worse than no change. A psychologist must meet rigorous educational, training, and ethical standards. There are local, state, and national psychological associations that help oversee psychologists' training and conduct. Each state has a licensing board that regulates the practice of psychology.
Psychologists have pursued the training and experience necessary to develop those keen diagnostic and intervention skills called for in the arena of human personality change. A psychologist is trained to deal with conflict situations. Often, such situations have the potential to become opportunities for constructive and positive change.
Dr. Alonso has an advanced doctoral degree in psychology. In addition, he is a nationally certified psycho-analyst. This involved an additional eight years in specialized depth-psychology training. Essentially this means that an individual with such training has a greater facility for understanding psycho-dynamics and cultural forces. A well-trained and developed clinical eye enables him to more quickly perceive obstacles to human potential and what is required to facilitate constructive change. He has spent over 75,000 hours in education, training, and work with individuals and organizations to effect behavioral change.
What is synergy? (Back to top)
Synergy is defined in the American College Dictionary as 1. Combined action. 2. The cooperative action of two or more bodily organs or the like.
Social synergy takes place when by becoming more effective, an individual makes his group more effective. Synergy resolves the dichotomy between selfishness and altruism. In synergy, separate individuals' needs become fused into one unified set of needs. A business organization needs to be synergistic to accomplish its potential. It needs to create a social climate where talented individuals who express their creativity and skills are admired and sought after, not envied; where personal needs are not met at the expense of others; and where common goals are shared.
Accomplishing synergy in work requires: best-fit personnel selection, enlightened management, and leadership development. We can help you accomplish synergy.
